September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month!
Do what you can to educate YOUR community.

Alopecia areata occurs in males and females of all ages and races; however, onset most often begins in childhood and can be psychologically devastating. Although not life-threatening, alopecia areata is most certainly life-altering, and its sudden onset, recurrent episodes, and unpredictable course have a profound psychological impact on the lives of those disrupted by this disease. But there is hope. In all cases, hair regrowth may occur even without treatment and even after many years.

It’s that time again where we put our heads together and roll up our sleeves for a common cause. Since September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, no day is better than today to start making plans to participate. Awareness Month has been celebrated in every fashion under the sun; there is no event too big and no idea too simple for Alopecia Areata Awareness Month.

The theme for this year’s Awareness Month is Starting Early: Educating Today’s Youth about Alopecia Areata, though you can get involved in any way that suits you! Please read through the materials below and contact lisa@naaf.org with your awareness month ideas!

Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata Totalis
Alopecia Areata Universalis

Alopecia areata is a common disease that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. There are three types of alopecia areata; alopecia areata, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis.

Alopecia areata, the most common variation of the autoimmune disease, presents itself as round, smooth patches of various sizes.

In all forms of alopecia areata, the hair follicles remain alive and are ready to resume normal hair production whenever they receive the appropriate signal. In all cases, hair regrowth may occur even without treatment and even after many years.

Getting Your Health Insurance to Cover the Cost of Your Unit.

Most insurance companies cover 80% to 100% of  the cost for lace wigs/cranial prosthesis/hair replacement. Ask your health care provider how many they will approve. Also some Health care providers will allow hair replacements yearly, but remember; a doctor's prescription must always accompany your claim for a hair replacement unit.
